This is a 12″ Functional Hunting Sirupate Khukuri | Full Tang Handmade Light Kukri by Ex Gurkha Khukuri House. This khukuri has a 12-inch razor-sharp blade made from highly graded 5160 carbon steel. The name “Sirupate’” is derived from the word “Siru” which is a species of grass that has very narrow and sharp leaves. Unlike other types of khukuris the blade of the Sirupate khukuri is very narrow that provides for razor-sharp cutting. The Sirupate design of this khukuri is accompanied by a raw finished blade. The blade is less bent at the spine and it is not as wide as other knives. This is a similar blade used by the Gurkha Regiments of the British Army nowadays.
The handle is 5-inch in length and made from rosewood. It has a full tang handle where two rosewood pieces are strongly riveted to the metal part of the handle each on both side. The metal part of the handle can be clearly seen running between the rosewood pieces. This type of handle is excellent for heavy-duty work as the impact of the blade is evenly distributed throughout the blade and to the user’s hand respectively.
The notch (kaura or kaudi) in the blade near the hilt of most khukuris serves as a conduit for the blood on the blade to drip out, thus preventing it from soiling the hilt & as well as a spot for catching and neutralizing an enemy blade.
There are two pockets on the back of the scabbard which hold a blunt steel called “chakmak” for sharpening the blade or for striking spark with a flint and a little sharp knife known as “karda” used for skinning small animals or cutting fruits.
The 12″ Functional Hunting Sirupate Khukuri is hand forged in Nepal by skilled blacksmiths (called “Kaamis” in Nepal ) who mostly belong to the “Bishwakarma” caste, an ethnic local community of small groups in Nepal who are professional skilled artisans involved only in crafting metal items. They use traditional methods of blade forging using traditional hand tools and by using the best quality materials available.
