This 14″ Historical Salyani Kukri represents a distinct aspect of Nepalese culture known as “Salyani”. The Salyani Khukuri, also referred to as “kukri” or “khukri” by many people outside Nepal, boasts a truly unique and distinctive design. Originally called Salyani khukuri in eastern Nepal, its name evolved to “Hancy Khukuri” with increasing popularity among Westerners. The Salyani blade stands out with its semi-curved, crescent-shaped blade devoid of any shoulder (peak). Intricate patterns, or carvings, adorn both sides of the blade’s top panel, offering a unique identity and showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.
Since the medieval era, the Salyani khukuri has featured various traditional and beautiful patterns, known as “buttas” in Nepali, covering the blade. Sometimes, gold and silver decorations were added to symbolize the religious and mythical aspects of the carrier and their ancestors. Individuals of high status often carried these ornately patterned “Buttewal” Salyanis to display their power and prowess. The meticulous etching of the blade, accomplished by bare hands using conventional tools, is a time-consuming process that demands great skill. The knife’s bevel is notably larger (deeper) than regular ones, providing a sharp and sleek edge for deep and deadly cuts. The legendary religious notch enhances the knife’s typical and classic appearance. The slim and slender, semi-curved blade of the Salyani khukuri contributes to its lighter weight.
